Work and Self Reliance

How many of you are familiar with this booklet?  (For the Strength of Youth) How many of you have read it?  This year we are going to focus on the standards in the Strength of Youth.  We would like you to think about it as for the Strength of YOUth.

The first presidency has this to say about the study of this book:

We promise that as you keep the covenants you have made and these standards, you will be blessed with the companionship of the Holy Ghost, your faith and testimony will grow stronger, and you will enjoy increasing happiness.

Our Father in Heaven has placed great trust in you. He has a work for you to do. Seek His guidance in prayer, and counsel with your parents and leaders. The decisions you make now will set the course for much of what will follow during your mortal life and throughout eternity.

Today we are going to discuss Work and Self Reliance.

Thou shalt not idle away thy time, neither shalt thou bury thy talent.
Doctrine and Covenants 60:13

Work is honorable. Developing a good work ethic will help you contribute to the world and bring increased sense of self-worth.

What are some ways we can help our children and families develop a good work ethic?

Goals are a good way to develop work.  It’s the first of the year.  What are some of the goals you have set for yourself?  We need to set goals and be willing to work hard to achieve them. Develop self-discipline, be dependable and doing your best in all of your worthwhile pursuits.  Heavenly Father has given gifts and talents to each of us and knows what we are capable of achieving. Seeking His help and guidance will us achieve our goals.

The Lord has commanded us not to be idle. Idleness can lead to inappropriate behavior, damaged relationships, and sin.  What are some things, as sisters, we could be caught up in that would be considered idleness?

One of the blessings of work is developing self-reliance. When you are self-reliant, you use the blessings and abilities God has given you to care for yourself and your family and to find solutions for your own problems.

Lehi and his family, after wandering in the wilderness for eight years, came to a land they called Bountiful because it was a place of much fruit and wild honey. They came to a great sea, and they rejoiced unto the Lord because He had preserved them. After they had been in the land Bountiful for a space of many days, the Lord spoke to Nephi and said, “Arise, and get thee into the mountain.” (1 Ne. 17:7.)

Nephi obeyed the Lord; he went into the mountain and prayed. And the Lord commanded Nephi, “Thou shalt construct a ship, after the manner which I shall show thee, that I may carry thy people across these waters.” (1 Ne. 17:8.)

What did Nephi then do?  Did he say, “What?! I don’t even have the first idea of how to build ship.” “And, oh yeah, I left any tools I had back in Jerusalem.”

Then Nephi asked the Lord, “Whither shall I go that I may find ore to molten, that I may make tools to construct the ship after the manner which thou hast shown unto me?” (1 Ne. 17:9).

The Lord instructed Nephi where he could find ore, but then Nephi was on his own. In 1 Nephi, chapter 17, we read:

“And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make a bellows wherewith to blow the fire, of the skins of beasts; and after I had made a bellows, that I might have wherewith to blow the fire, I did smite two stones together that I might make fire. …

“And it came to pass that I did make tools of the ore which I did molten out of the rock.”

Why is this story so interesting?  Tells of an instance in which the Lord provided help but then stepped aside to allow one of His sons to exercise his own initiative.

Are there other stories that shows individuals using the blessings and abilities God has given them to care for themselves and their family and to find solutions for your own problems?

Self-reliance does not mean that you must do all things on your own. To be truly self-reliant, you must learn how to work with others and turn to the Lord for His help and strength.  The Lord will help us in times of need, especially when we are committed to His work and respond to His will. But the Lord only helps those who are willing to help themselves. He expects His children to be self-reliant to the degree they can be.

Brigham Young instructed the Saints, “Instead of searching after what the Lord is going to do for us, let us inquire what we can do for ourselves.” (Discourses of Brigham Young, sel. John A. Widtsoe, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1978, p. 293.)

Independence and self-reliance are important to our spiritual and temporal growth. Whenever we find ourselves in situations which threaten our self-reliance, what happens?  We feel our freedoms threatened. If we increase our dependence on anything or anyone except the Lord, we will find an immediate decrease in our freedom to act. As President Heber J. Grant declared, “Nothing destroys the individuality of a man, a woman, or a child as much as the failure to be self-reliant.” (Relief Society Magazine, Oct. 1937, p. 627.)

ELDER PERRY’S Family tradition:

My parents established a family tradition in our home which was fun for me in my early years and has become even more meaningful as I reflect back on it as the years have passed. On the first birthday of each child the family would gather in the living room. In the center of the living room floor, our parents would place articles for the one-year-old child to select. The selection to be made might indicate an interest the child would pursue in life. The articles were the Bible, a child’s bottle filled with milk, a toy, and a savings bank, filled with coins. The child was placed on one side of the room and the family on the other side. Family members would encourage the child to crawl toward the objects and make a selection. This was all in fun, of course.

Scriptures represent our need for spiritual nourishment.
In the scriptures, the Lord reveals His will to us. He has instructed His prophets to record His communications with them for our benefit. The scriptures have eternal values and are the foundation we can build a successful life on. We become more self-reliant when we study the scriptures, which teach the principles that provide a divine center to our lives.

We have the best text which has ever been written, or ever will be written, as our guide.
We can turn to 2 Kings, the fifth chapter, and learn about obedience.
We can study the life of Job and learn integrity.
King Benjamin’s address in Mosiah teaches industry
The life of Joseph, as told in Genesis 39, tells us what we should do when our standard of morality is being tested.

These are just a few examples of the lessons, can you think of others?

The bottle filled with milk symbolizes the physical body’s need for nourishment.
Our Welfare Services program has taught us to define the essential elements of temporal self-reliance. The elements are education; physical health; employment; home storage; resource management; and social, emotional, and spiritual strength.

FEBRUARY ACTIVITY

STRAWBERRY STORY

The toy represents the acquisition of things of the world.
We are bombarded with “acquire now and pay later”, no payments no interest until 2015. We live in an impatient world where everyone wants everything now, instant gratification over any kind of lasting satisfaction.

Using what we have wisely and extending their life will help us become more self-reliant. I’m sure there are many mothers in here that held or are holding on to clothes for a younger sibling.  Trevor is currently wearing a shirt that has been worn by both his brothers.

We live in a world blessed with so much abundance. Let us be certain that the resources with which we are blessed are never wasted.

The fourth item, the bank is a symbol of our financial well-being.
Who can give me a definition of interest?    Elder Perry’s boss gave this definition: Thems that understands it, earns it; and thems that don’t, pays it.”

Now it doesn’t take a genius to understand that before you can collect interest, you must first have some savings. Having savings while continuing to increase one’s standard of living requires understanding of one simple practice and then religiously applying it. After paying your tithing of 10 percent to the Lord, you pay yourself a predetermined amount directly into savings. That leaves you a balance of your income to budget for taxes, food, clothing, shelter, transportation, etc. It is amazing to me that so many people work all of their lives for the grocer, the landlord, the power company, the automobile salesman, and the bank, and yet think so little of their own efforts that they pay themselves nothing.

It is by consistently and regularly adding to your investments that you will build your emergency and retirement savings. This will add to your progress in becoming self-reliant.

The principle of self-reliance is spiritual as well as temporal. It is not a doomsday program; it is something to be practiced each and every day of our lives.

Happy Anniversary

We have been married 22 years, where does the time go.  Since it falls at the end of lacrosse and wedding season we don't really do much.  We decided to make our trip to Europe our celebration. James did send some chocolate.

Wicked

My wonderful husband of 21 years surprised me with tickets to the Broadway musical, "Wicked" for our anniversary. It is a wonderful musical. If you get the chance, its a must see!!

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and her relationship with Galinda, later Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel, Glinda is the Good Witch of the South). Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace. The plot begins before and continues after Dorothy's arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to the events depicted in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a backstory.

Happy 40th Birthday to ME!

I have been dreading turning 40. I know it's all in my head, but still. I has been one of the best birthdays.

My brother, John and his family came through last weekend and gave me a wonderful, homemade card by the girls and some IKEA items. How can you not LOVE Ikea?!

Since I am working Saturdays, I now have a day off during the week. So on Thursday, I treated myself to a massage with foot pampering. My friend, Carmen took me to lunch and we were able to visit for awhile.

Thursday night, James had told me to be ready to go at 6:30 pm on Friday. He said he had plans on Saturday. I didn't think much of it. So the time came and he was just walking around, so I asked are we doing something or not. He said, "I have to make a confession, the plans I have for tomorrow are with you, but your friends are suppose to be here now." "Are you sure I have friends?" Just then my good friends, Mashell, Melissa and Ginny came to surprise me and take me to dinner. We stay out late just talking. It was great!

Saturday, James had me open my gift which was a kindle. It's a pretty cool toy. I will be great for our upcoming cruise. After work, he went out and brought back some balloons and cards from him and the kids. Also a key lime pie. YUMM! We went to a late dinner at Tucanos, a Brazilian churrascoria. James sang to me in the car, so they didn't have to at the restuarant.

I got cards and calls and facebook wishes. This has been one of the best birthdays!! Thanks to everyone.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I 'jacked up' my ankle wakeboarding, because that's a lot better story than stepping off the front porch.

The day before Mikah's birthday, I was cleaning up the front porch because it is so handy to just drop everthing when you come in the house. I was moving the plants to sweep and I went to move one to the front of the porch and missed stepped. It's about a two foot drop and my ankle took the roll of the century with a pot of flowers. It's not broken but I almost wish it was, cause it HURTS!!

We've made it another year

19 years and I wouldn't change a thing. James and I took the day off. We went to a funeral in the morning and took the afternoon and watched a movie. We had gone to lunch the Friday before.

San Diego

Ah, another weekend away without the kids. Just kidding. San Diego was fabulous, another great convention and WARM weather. Mark your calendars for March 22, The Celebrity Apprentice. ACN is being featured for the full two hours!!

After the convention, Kris Jensen and I had a few hours before we left. We decided to check out the USS Midway. It was huge. We took the audio tour. I don't know how anyone taller then me could live on one of those ships. Some interesting tidbits;

1. Did you know that everything travels clockwise on a carrier? It's so they can lock down areas and keep them water tight. There are post times that you can be in the various areas.

2. Enlisted men didn't have to pay for their meals. Officers did.

3. Your were given an assigned time to visit the doctor, whether you were sick or not.

That's all I can remember.

Cello

Some of you will say, are you crazy! I have been inspired by my children and their musical talent, so I thought I would try learning an instrument. I have to stick to the same rules that I have for them; commit for one year. This week I have just been practicing holding the bow and bowing. It's a little awkward. I've looked at a couple of lessons on youtube. I am suppose to get some music tomorrow. Just bowing gets a little boring.

World's Bestest Husband

On Wednesday, I got a bouquet of flowers. I had been in a "funk" and just didn't know how I could change things. James asked if I was happy and I said no. He came home with flowers to cheer me up. Things did pick up from then.

Hawaii

After Halloween, it started to get cold, so we left for warmer weather. HAWAII!! and NO KIDS!! Mom and Dad flew up to babysit. James' parents flew all of the family over. There were 13 total; John, Loraine (parents) and siblings and spouses, Blaine and Debbie, Karan, Connie and LeGrande, JoAnn and Darrell, Don and Mary and us. We started the trip with a little snag in SLC, which lasted 7 hours. (snow) But the trip started to smooth out from there.

We spend two days in Honolulu; visited the Polynesian Cultural Center and Pearl Harbor. I found the job that I would love to do for the rest of my life at the International Market Place. I want to work at the Pick a Pearl stands. You get to pick an oyster and open it up to see the pearl. Absolutely loved it!! I could stand there all day and open oysters. It's like Christmas every time. James didn't like it so much, but it took care of buying me any Christmas gifts.

The rest of the time we spent on Kauai. It is alot more laid back, not as touristy. We snorkled, took a helicopter ride, and kayaked up the Wailula River. I'm not a lay around the beach kind, so we would have to go to the other islands next time.

(I added a slide show at the bottom of the blog)

Reba Concert

I know I'm behind, what else is new. We went to the Kelly Clarkson/Reba McEntire on October 9. I wasn't a fan of Kelly Clarkson before but now, but man, has she got a set of pipes! I didn't know that Melissa Peterman was opening the show, but it was a great surprise. Anyone watch Reba? I love the show. Barbara Jean is the best character and she plays her wonderfully. James went with me to humor me for the most part. He did find one fan in the audience to watch during the show. He was a hoot!

20 year High School reunion

I wasn't able to go to my class reunion, but they had a mega reunion the next weekend. They are tearing down and rebuilding my high school. It has been standing for 46 years and our family attended 20 of those years. I had gotten on facebook and found several classmates. An elementary friend, Amy posted quite a few pictures from the reunion and so it was almost like you were there.

I flew down late, late Wednesday. I did some casual complaning with the car rental and scored a convertible. I guess it pays to fly in at 1:00 in the morning. On Thursday, went to lunch with Amy. After lunch I went and surprised grandma. It was a good visit. That night went to the school open house. I saw a few teachers, Mrs. Peel and Mrs. Bach. Didn't see too many classmates, Amy Studdard and Shannon DiGiovanni. It was homecoming, so I took Dad to the game. Clint and Elizabeth came too. It looks like they have a pretty good team. Afterwards, I went to this BBQ place for the after party. Lots of smoke and beer! I did run into Angela Freeman, John Martin, Melissa Horstman and Ronna Caruthers. It turned out to be a good trip.

Medical update

I ran into a friend last night that had just read my blog and wanted to know how things were going. I realized that I hadn't updated any of my medical drama. I went to the doctor at the beginning of the month for another blood check. My levels have come back to within 'normal range'. YEA!! I do have to go back in 2-3 months for follow up, but he doesn't think that there will be a change. We will live off of his diagnosis for now.

Back to School

The kids go back to school in one week. YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!! Can you tell that I'm excited?! They will all be in school full time. I can't believe how expensive it is. I have never paid this much to get them ready for school and we didn't go school clothes shopping. When I was in Junior High and High School we didn't have class fees. They make you pay for an activity card, yearbook, certain classes have fees, publishing fees, parking fees, locker maintenance, lock maintenance, pe uniforms and I'm sure there a few others that I forgot. Can you say a few hundred dollars? School supplies and shoes are pretty much the rest so that was another car payment worth of money. I'll stop whining and just focus on the seven hours of NO KIDS!

Bicycle, Bicycle

About mid-summer, I was getting tired of paying for gas. $4 a gallon for gas is my limit. I'm sure I'm not the only one. I made Mikah ride the bus home from summer school. It required two buses, but he didn't melt. I then made Connor ride the bus from Lacrosse camp, which is downtown. He did great. So if I'm going to make them, I better be willing to do it myself. So I started with the bus. The bus schedule runs just off from my work schedule, so I would be getting there fairly early and leaving the kids more.

So I went and bought me a bike. This is the style, but mine is white. I started looking and found one that I liked, it was a good price, when to the store and they were gone. I studied another bike, it was a good price and then it was gone. Who would have thought that buying a bike would be so hard. This time of year, the numbers get few and the next years models don't arrive until September sometime. In Boise, there has been a run on women specific bikes and so there are hardly any left. So I set my price point a little higher and started calling and found the bike.

We had told the boys that they could ride the bus or bikes to school. The bus ride makes them ride for an hour before school, so it will be bikes. I haven't been sore riding to work. We rode to school registrations, orthodontist appt., the pool. It's not that slower than if we had driven. I find myself looking at were I can ride next and the boys have enjoyed some freedom.

I'm not falling apart

I saw both my doctors today.

The endocrinologist gave me a name for my condition, silent thyroiditis. Silent thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland that involves alternating hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism followed by recovery. YEA!! It's not a life-long condition. They are not sure what brings it on, but should go away within a year. There is a possibility that eventually I would develop hypothyroidism, but I can live with that in 10-15 years from now, when I'm REALLY OLD and I'm suppose to have problems.

The surgeon said everything looked good. The fibroid was benign. It doesn't increase my chances of breast cancer and since I'm past puberty, I probably won't get another one. YEA!!

Biopsy

On Monday, I went under the knife for my breast biopsy. It was an all day ordeal for a 45 minutes procedure. Everything went well. They are 99.9% that is not cancerous. I haven't had any pain. While I was there I had them pull my thyroid test. It stated that "this patient is remarkedly hypothyroid". My thyroid appears grossly normal. Yea! something normal. On the 2nd, I will go over treatment with my doctor.
